AI and the Virtues

Thu, Apr 16

We've spent a good part of this semester discussing virtue ethics and technology. Now it's time to turn that lens on AI. Today we return to the work of philosopher Shannon Vallor, who has of late been considering how society can live well with AI technology without losing itself in poorly implemented software.

We have two main in-class learning goals. By the end of lecture today you will:

  1. Understand technomoral virtues as they apply to AI.
  2. See how AI can either inhibit or build virtue in its users.

This Week's Dialogue Group Meeting

Find at least one hour to meet with your group to discuss the prompt of the week: Identify key features of four different AI algorithms / platforms (your choice) and consider if these features uphold or violate your chosen virtues. This is the first part of the technical inquiry piece of your design pattern creation process.
