Seeing is Believing

Thu, Nov 09

Today we turn our attention back to visual media, this time investigating the latest developments in AI-driven image synthesis. Digital image synthesis isn't a new concept, as it was possible to create photorealistic scenes using computer graphics as far back as the 1990s. However, a recent innovation has been the automation of the image synthesis process through the use of sophisticated machine learning techniques. We'll discuss the technologies behind this development, and look at their social implications. From Deepfakes to new genres of digital artwork, there is much to be concerned and excited about when it comes to AI creating imagery.

We have three main in-class learning goals. By the end of lecture today you will:

  1. Gain familiarity with generative models for image synthesis.
  2. Learn about various deceptive practices that incorporate image synthesis.
  3. Appreciate the mainstream creative use of image synthesis technologies.

The slides for today's lecture.
